Samen ontdekken hoe ritme werkt

Unlock Better Rhythm and Timing in Your Guitar Playing at Hart

Do you already know your basic guitar chords, but feel that your rhythm playing still sounds slightly stiff or hesitant? Or do you notice that changing between chords doesn’t always lock smoothly into the beat when you play along with a song? Many guitarists hit this exact roadblock: your fingers know where to go on the fretboard, but the overall sound lacks the tight groove and dynamic feel you are aiming for. To help you develop that essential rhythmic foundation, music school Learn Guitar is hosting a hands-on workshop titled Rhythm & Timing for Guitarists at cultural centre Hart on the Kleine Houtweg.

During this focused three-hour session, guitarist and instructor Werner Bonthuys guides you through the practical mechanics of dependable timing. Instead of bogging you down with dry musical theory, Bonthuys focuses on a direct, physical connection to rhythm. You will explore what it feels like to hold an internal pulse, discover how to stay relaxed in tempo without rushing, and see how your strumming hand acts as the engine of your sound.

Exploring timing, pulse and groove together
The afternoon is built entirely around active participation and playing together. Alongside fellow musicians, you will examine how rhythm works from the inside out and how to use it musically. Through structured exercises, you will practice locking into a steady pulse, navigating subdivisions of the beat, and using accents and syncopations. These simple tools instantly make familiar chord progressions sound more dynamic and engaging. The process goes beyond just strumming: participants will clap, count aloud, and strum together to train their internal clock.

A key highlight of the workshop is the drum mode technique. In this exercise, you lightly mute the strings across the fretboard with your fretting hand so that no notes ring out. Your guitar effectively becomes a percussion instrument. By removing the distraction of fingerings and chord shapes, you can focus entirely on the movement, relaxation, timing, and dynamic control of your strumming arm. Once that motion feels smooth and locked into time, you bring the technique straight back to full chords.

Open to acoustic and electric players
The workshop is designed for both acoustic and electric guitarists aged 13 and older. As long as you know your standard open chords, you will have plenty of foundation to take part. Reading sheet music is not required, as every concept is demonstrated clearly and learned by ear. The workshop is taught in English.

Participants must bring their own guitar, pick, and tuner. The aim is to ensure you not only enjoy an inspiring session in Haarlem, but also continue making steady progress at home. Everyone leaves with practical exercises and a focused ten-minute daily practice routine to help lock these rhythm habits into muscle memory.
